On Aging

My mind and my body may grow weak,
    but God is my strength;
he is all I ever need.

Psalm 73:26

Good News Translation (GNT)

I don't consider myself old by any means, but I'm sure there are younger folk that might look at me and think otherwise.  I was young once so I know how it is.  Looking back, I can recall when I was in my twenties and saw my father not even yet fifty as an old guy who wasn't with the times and cherished a Sunday afternoon nap.  Now I'm many years older than he was and in many ways don't feel much older than I was in my twenties.   Obviously I'm a bit deluded .  After all, I don't even have to ask for a senior discount when it's available--the cashier just adds it based on what they perceive.

Old age is inevitable.  Now I like my naps and my body can't handle the same things it used to in younger days.  My physical condition is still pretty good, but I can feel it waning.  Hopefully I have a long way to go with many years ahead, but I can't say what tomorrow will bring and certainly not next year or ten years from now.  One thing I can count on is that God will always be there no matter what kind of physical shape I'm in.

       The Lord is my strength.

“Amen!
Praise and glory
and wisdom and thanks and honor
and power and strength
be to our God for ever and ever.
Amen!”

Revelation 7:12

  1. Very true, Lee. My body is sagging here and there and my energy level needs a bit of a boost via caffeine or a nap. But in my mind I am still able to do a cartwheel, climb the 1000 Steps without resting, and stay up till 2 AM talking knowing I will be able to sleep in the next day. I'm just glad God appreciates oldsters. I like the verse, "Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life." Proverbs 16:31

  3. when I was in my teens, I thought thirty was old. Now the grocery clerk asks me if I need help carrying my stuff to the car. Grrrr.

Roy Clark said it best in a song, Yesterday, When I Was Young.
    Love your philosophy, btw.

  4. 2 Cor 5:16 -- Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day.

It is inevitable. But God is good and works on our "inner man" and that's what really matters.
