Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.
Mark 13:8
New International Version (NIV)
Of late there have been some predictions of a large earthquake that will occur on or around October 3rd. The most specific prediction I've heard has been that a 9.7 quake will hit San Francisco on the morning of that day. For the past few months my wife has been sensing that a large earthquake is coming. She says that she has been having dreams.
We live in California so it's not particularly surprising that these things might be on her mind. I often have an expectation that an earthquake is coming. We've had a few shakers in the past several years that have put us on edge.
Events in today's world sound like the prophesies we read in the Bible. These things have always been with us throughout history, yet more than ever they seem to be on many of our minds. We seem to be getting closer, but no one knows for sure.
It could happen, but will it? Oh, it will, but is the end coming yet? Or perhaps the more important question is are you ready for the time when it does?
You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.
“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.
Matthew 24:6-9
New International Version (NIV)
Hadn't heard about this prediction, but having been born and raised in L.A., I know how massive and destructive a 9.7 shaker would be.

When we talk about end times, people like to say you can find examples of many of the things predicted all throughout history. It does seem now though, that certain shifts in governments and their loyalties make it feel more imminent, along with all the ever increasing natural disasters, etc. I know where my hope lies, and while it is easy to let anxiety and fear seep in, we can have peace. He's got the whole world in His hands!
ReplyDeleteWell, Arlee, since the government shut-down is still the big news, I guess California is safe this morning. Predictions like this come and go numerous times each year. Suffice it to say, only God knows about these things.
ReplyDeleteStMc -- A 9.7 quake would be very scary I'm sure. The tsunami would supposedly cause the most damage, but where I live I don't guess I'd get the immediate bad effects of that. The social effects of infrastructure would probably be the most worrisome part.
ReplyDeleteJoyce -- I've been hearing these types of predictions all my life. No matter what happens Christians have something very positive to look forward to.
Pam-- I wonder what the government would do in the event of a massive catastrophe. Would the political nonsense end at least long enough for them to attend to the real problems at hand? One thing about the shutdown is that attention has been diverted from Syria and other issues in the Middle Eastern countries. That where the real newsworthy events are happening.

I hadn't heard anything about an earthquake happening today. A 9.7 earthquake is quite a scary thought.
