“Ask the former generation
and find out what their ancestors learned,
for we were born only yesterday and know nothing,
and our days on earth are but a shadow.
10 Will they not instruct you and tell you?
Will they not bring forth words from their understanding?"

Job 8:8-10

New International Version (NIV)

The Holy Bible is many things--a book of laws, moral examples, guidelines for healthy and successful living, instructions for salvation, and many other subjects.  It is also a history book.  Much of this history is not taught in school yet it is in many cases the foundation upon which modern society was built.

In more recent times archeologists and scholars have found clear evidence that the accounts told in the Bible actually did happen.   Ancient writings affirm the stories.  Archeological artifacts are concrete proof that the people, places, and events described in the Bible were real.

Historical accounts remind us of the errors of those who lived before us and should be heeded in order not to repeat those old mistakes.  If we think there is nothing to be learned from people who lived thousands of years ago then we are mistaken.  Human nature has not changed and morally we are no smarter than they were.

There a solid reason for recording the events of an era.  History is a teacher that is often ignored.  The same mistakes have happened repeatedly.  If previous generations had heeded the warnings and the wisdom of the Biblical historical record, then much suffering and evil might have been avoided.

When we start to believe that we have become a utopian society and ignore past history, we are setting ourselves up for destruction.   The Word is from God and when that Word is ignored then God is mocked.

These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come.  So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!

1 Corinthians 10:11-12

New International Version (NIV)

  1. Thank you for the morning Bible thoughts to go with my coffee. An excellent way to wake up. And the history of the Bible continues in the excavations that continue to prove cities and characters of the Bible existed.
