Rich Mullins is most noted for "Awesome God" which has become a classic and a standard hymn of praise sung by Christians throughout the world. During a career that spanned two decades, Mullins created a respectable body of work and was highly regarded as a singer, songwriter, and musician.
In 1997 Rich Mullins was killed in a jeep crash on his way to a benefit concert in Illinois.
His friend Rick Elias was where I heard the name Elias and liked it enough to use for my son we call Eli. I believe he was in the jeep with him? Can't remember for sure.
I cried the day I heard Rich Mullins died. I was a bridesmaid in a wedding and heard it on the radio in a car and cried in my dress. A magnificent musician. You couldn't have chosen a better M, in my opinion.
Rick Elias was in his band but it was his manager who was in the jeep with him when they had the accident. He survived. Rick Elias has just announced he's putting out an album this year, after ten years or so with none. FYI :)
Most enjoyable so sad about his sad passing.
ReplyDeleteYvonne.
Wow, I used to listen to him in high school, but I hadn't realized he died. You're right, though-- instant anthem!
ReplyDeleteLosing Rich Mullins was a great loss. I'm enjoying all the posts. It's made me pull out some old cassettes. And a few albums. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteOh my.... how sad, but what a legacy!
ReplyDeleteGreat post!

ReplyDelete--Thanks for stopping by my blog and more importantly for co-hosting A to Z ..so rewarding.
He was a great poet too. Have you read his The World as I Remember It: Through the Eyes of a Ragamuffin?
ReplyDeleteThis is a lovely series, Lee. And what a shame Mullins was killed when he probably still had so many songs left to write.

Yvonne -- This has become a classic song.
ReplyDeleteKelley -- I hadn't heard that he'd died until relatively recently.
Bethie -- When I've done music series on my blogs I tend to start listening to music I haven't listened to in a while.
Doris -- He left a great body of work, but this song alone would have cinched his legacy.
Shecki -- You may be right about that. I seem to remember that name.
Donna -- Thank you for stopping by.
Jinky -- Thank you!
Petra -- I'm only familiar with his music. Have not read the poetry.
